Arranging elements in a way that amuses my eyes, allows me a certain satisfaction that I can’t find in other accomplishments. When a project is finished I have a purposefully composed impression that is forever set as a static thought into the community around me. It’s as if I have signed some proverbial wall somewhere, “Kathryn was here!” This in turn gives me another underlying relation to the world around me. I am here because my art is… or vice-versa.
At present, I am doing all of my painting on handmade wooden boxes that I have covered with a smooth, sanded layer of plaster. I call them hanging boxes. The inspiration for this came to me when a favorite mural of mine had to be painted over during a move. I was sad that this had to happen, and began imaging myself taking a chainsaw to that section of the wall, removing my mural and walking off with it under my arm. This of course could never have worked, and I would then have had the matter of a hole in the wall to deal with. So I began building my own portable sections of wall, murals you can take with you when you have to move.
These boxes remind me of the Greek fresco technique. However the plaster is dry when painted on instead of wet, and the plaster is bought at Home Depot. I build these boxes, turn their backs forward and then paint my images. I love working so closely with the wood. It appeals to some natural side of me. I know I am finished when the piece gives me a feeling of contentment. I hope that they do the same for whoever may view them.
